Inaugural UL Chancellor’s Concert

published on Mar 09th, 2009

UL’s inaugural Chancellor’s Concert was held on 5th March 2009 in the newly-opened Irish Chamber Orchestra (ICO) Building located on UL’s Clare Campus. It was the first ever public performance to take place in the new building.

Organised by the UL Foundation, the event included an exclusive black tie dinner in the Millstream Restaurant at the south side of the ‘Living Bridge’. Guests then proceeded across the bridge to the ICO Building to enjoy the concert performance by world renowned pianist Mr John O’Conor accompanied on the night by the Irish Chamber Orchestra. Mr O’ Conor has earned a worldwide reputation as a masterful interpreter of the classic and early-romantic repertoires and has toured the world making recital and concerto appearances. He has made regular visits to Europe, the USA, Japan, Korea and China.

Proceeds from the event will go towards supporting the University as it takes the lead in a number of regeneration initiatives for Limerick city.

Speaking at the pre-concert dinner, UL Chancellor Peter Malone paid tribute to the development and innovation taking place at UL, including the physical developments on the Clare Campus such as the new Health Sciences Building and the, soon-to-be-completed, Irish World Academy of Music and Dance Building.

The ICO has been based at the University of Limerick since 1995 and has built a reputation for the highest level of musical excellence. The new ICO Building was opened in November 2008 by Martin Cullen TD, Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism.
