Irish Aid, the Government’s aid organisation, facilitated the purchase of a major consignment of books on the developing world for the Special Collections Department of the Glucksman Library at UL.

The collection will support teaching and learning in the areas of politics, economics, history, culture and education in the developing world. Speaking at the event to mark the contribution, Minister of State for Overseas Development, Peter Power, said, “My hope is that this donation will help promote engagement with these issues among a new generation of students. The move of the Irish Aid headquarters to Limerick provides a great opportunity to further strengthen the sharing of knowledge and expertise with the University of Limerick in the fight against global poverty. This ceremony hosted by President Barry reflects that spirit of collaboration.”  Also speaking at the event, Professor Don Barry said, “This new addition of material to the Glucksman Library represents a very important contribution to the University’s capacity to undertake work in the field of development studies and development education. For ten years UL has offered a masters and doctoral programme in Peace and Development Studies. Increasingly this has addressed the concerns of the developing world and has drawn students from Africa and Asia, including Irish Aid scholarship holders.”
