President Bill Clinton Speaks at Global Irish Economic Forum

published on Oct 08th, 2011

Speaking at the Goblal Irish Economic Forum in Dublin Castle, former US President Bill Clinton recalled a suggestion he made at the recent launch in New York of the University of Limerick Frank McCourt Chair in Creative Writing.  He reiterated his idea that Ireland should conduct oral histories, starting with those aged over 85, which tell the story of how Ireland emerged from abject poverty some decades ago.

President Clinton also announced plans to host a special summit in New York to attract increased investment into the Republic. He told delegates that the State could do much more to maximise foreign investment by targeting senior business leaders from outside the traditional diaspora.  In particular, he said the State should begin to focus more on emerging markets such as India and Brazil, whose economies are expanding rapidly.
